Mississippi is on the Rise

Recently, the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT) held its annual conference in Atlanta. As a member of the NASACT board, I attend each year to share some of Mississippi’s successes and learn from the innovations taking place in states across the country.

This year, I’m pleased to report that Mississippi came home with a little recognition of our own.

I was honored to receive the NASACT President’s Award, recognizing the work our team has done to modernize the Mississippi Treasury and strengthen the way we serve taxpayers.

In presenting the award, NASACT Executive Director Josh Winfrey, CPA, said: “NASACT is proud to recognize Treasurer McRae for his contributions at both the state and national levels. His leadership and engagement with colleagues across the country reflect his commitment to advancing sound public financial management, sharing best practices, and strengthening service to the people of Mississippi.”

For decades, Mississippi was too often known nationally for where we fell short. We ranked near the bottom in education, income, health, and far too many other measures.

But that story is changing.

Mississippi is on the rise, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Since 2020, our Treasury team has earned more than $1 billion in interest income for the state and returned nearly $200 million in unclaimed money to Mississippians. We’ve modernized our college and career savings programs, lowered fees, and expanded opportunities for families to use those savings toward some of Mississippi’s most in-demand vocational training programs.

All of this as our education system is “miraculously” transformed and more than $80 billion in economic investment is bringing new opportunities in technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and other job-creating industries.

These successes are bigger than any one office, administration, or award. They are part of a larger story unfolding across our state.

Mississippi has always been special. Our people work hard. We look after our neighbors. We understand the value of a dollar and the importance of a good day’s work. Now, those values are paying dividends, and the rest of the country is beginning to take notice.

That’s what makes recognition like the NASACT President’s Award so meaningful. It’s another sign that Mississippi isn’t content to be defined by where we’ve been. We’re showing the country where we’re going.

Of course, our work isn’t done. I want to keep investing in Mississippi, returning money to its rightful owners, strengthening opportunities for families, and doing everything I can to help our state grow.

Mississippi is on the rise. I’m committed to keeping it that way.
